Could you beat the Duchess of Cambridge to the best dressed spot? Vanity Fair opens up prestigious list to mere mortals
Vanity Fair's famous annual International Best-Dressed List has been opened up to the public.
The two winners of the magazine's Best-Dressed Challenge - one male and one female - to be selected by a group of editors - will have their names and photos featured in the famed September issue.
'People who come into the list in this way will probably have more interesting looks than those who come the traditional way,' Vanity Fair's editor, Graydon Carter, told the New York Times.
Last year's line-up included famous faces like actress Diane Kruger, model Poppy Delevinge, designer Stella McCartney and, of course, Duchess Kate Middleton, who appeared in the list for the third year running.
But for the first time ever, non-famous people can upload photos of themselves on the magazine's website and tag them #vfbestdressed via Twitter and Instagram, to enter for a spot on this year's list and other prizes to be won.
Every week, the Vanity Fair team will select their favorite images to feature as 'Editor's Picks' on the website.
Tough competition: Kate Middleton has topped Vanity Fair's Best Dressed List for three years running
At the end of June, two entrants will be selected for a spot in the famous style compilation, joining the ranks of actresses and influential figures like Jessica Chastain and Kate Middleton.
The Best-Dressed List was first compiled in 1940 by Eleanor Lambert, founder of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, as a way to promote American designers during World War II.
Although the prestigious line-up has since expanded its borders to include international figures, up until now it has mostly been reserved for socialites, actors, actresses, editors, designers and royalty.
Previous winners: Jessica Chastain (at the 2012
Golden Globes in Givenchy) and Diane Kruger (at the Chanel haute couture
show in July 2012) both made the list last year
By Royal appointment: Princess Alexandra

Princess Mary of Denmark (right) were among the royals to make the 2012
Vanity Fair list
The Duchess of Cambridge is by no means the
only royal to make the list. Last year her brother-in-law, Prince Harry, also
featured, as did Monaco's Charlotte Casiraghi and HRH Crown Princess
Mary of Denmark.Italian socialites and power couple Ginevra Elkann and Giovanni Gaetani dell'Aquila d'Aragona also appeared together.
Other major names to make the list were singer Alicia Keys, actress Fan Bingbing and British actor Eddie Redmayne.
In it together: Colin and Livia Firth appeared
as a single entry (left) and Lauren and Andrés Santo
Domingo also featured on the list as a couple (right)
Although competition this year will no doubt be fierce, those who submit photos will also be considered for inclusion in a weekly slideshow on the website.
And unsuccessful entrants can still win prizes from a number of big-name brands including Neiman Marcus and Armani.
