You have probably heard of the Sex Pistols, arguably one of the first
true punk bands of the 1970s but what about Public Image Ltd (PIL).
Public Image Limited is the 1978
brainchild of Johnny “Rotten” Lydon -the lead singer of the Sex
Pistols, and included Keith Levene on guitar, Jah Wobble and various
other members.

The key to the success of PIL was Rotten’s ability to combine
synthesizers with long drubbing baselines and his unusual vocal
abilities. Johnny Rotten was an “in your face individual” and sang that
way. He over- pronounced his words when singing and had a trailing,
trilling voice that echoed without effects. Johnny Rotten’s success
with PIL and Branson’s Sex Pistols gives him an unusual qualification of
being one of the few musicians that can be credited with beginning 2
forms of music -punk rock and alternative music also. He was extremely
