Truck driver 'pulled a gun on a pregnant woman because he was enraged she was smoking'
A man allegedly pulled a gun on a pregnant woman because he was enraged that she was smoking.
Justin Palmer, 24, of Washington state, reportedly stopped his pickup truck Wednesday to shout at a smoker on a sidewalk, 'Who the heck smokes when they're pregnant?'
The woman replied, 'I do’, said Bellingham police spokesman Mark Young.
Unsatisfied with her answer, the argument escalated and the 24-year-old allegedly pointed a gun at the woman, who was not identified.
Palmer then drove off and was stopped by police a short time later.
Palmer acknowledged confronting the woman but denied pulling a gun, Young said.
Police say they found two semiautomatic .45-caliber handguns in his pickup's center console.
Young says Palmer was arrested for investigation of pointing a gun.
According to the 2008 data from 29
states approximately 13 per cent of women reported smoking during the
last three months of pregnancy.
Of women who smoked 3 months before pregnancy, 45 per cent quit during pregnancy. Among women who quit smoking during pregnancy, half relapsed within six months after delivery.
Earlier this month researchers added to the list of the harmful effects of smoking while pregnant - warning that women who smoke in pregnancy could be putting their children at greater risk of being fat as teenagers.
They fear that smoking leads to subtle structural variations in the growing brain of the unborn baby that create a preference for eating fatty foods.
